Nidarosdomens Cathedral Men and Boys Choir (Nidarosdomens Guttekor), Norway’s oldest men and boys choir, are finally making their much-anticipated public debut in Singapore. Be enchanted by their wide repertoire of traditional and classical works, including major pieces for choir, orchestra and soloists. In the first half of the programme, the choir will be accompanied by Magne Draagen on the organ, performing different repertoire on each night to showcase their range and versatility.

The choir continues a more than 900-year old tradition of Nidarosdomen. The Nidaros Cathedral is still their main concert arena and you can regularly find them participating at church services. The choir is also active outside the cathedral and represents Norway as cultural ambassadors at international events.

The choir abounds with a rich history dating back to the 9th century, when Norwegian and English Stonemasons came to Trondheim to build the Christchurch – a precursor to Nidarosdomen. Priests would teach the young sons of the Stonemasons the Gregorian liturgy. The boys would then participate during church services, originating the modern boys choir tradition of the cathedral we see today.

The choir is led by Bjørn Moe, the conductor and artistic director of Nidarosdomens Guttekor. Bjørn himself was a former Nidarosdomens Guttekor choir boy and has been conducting them since 1973. The Norwegian conductor was awarded the prestigious HM The King’s Medal of Merit in gold for his work with the choir.

Nidarosdomens Cathedral Men and Boys Choir will be accompanied by Singaporean chamber orchestra, re:SOUND, to perform Giacomo Puccini’s classic piece, Messa di Gloria, in what is expected to be a hauntingly beautiful rendition. re:SOUND is a chamber orchestra that is not led by a dominant artistic director or principal conductor, but by the musicians themselves.
